Our last meeting was another lively and educational evening at Croydon Communicators. We received a warm reception from our Vice President of Education, Gina, who set the tone for our wonderful evening. Our Toastmaster for the evening, Michael, informed us of the role of a Toastmaster and guided us through the agenda. The theme of our meeting was ‘it’s never too late’ and attendees provided us all with creative responses to our theme. Michael told us that he has never baked a cake and that it’s never too late to learn to bake!
Our Timekeeper contributed to the theme by giving a witty it’s ‘never too late but it could be too late if you go over time.’ Our Grammarian then took to the stage and, after explaining that it was never too late to keep fit, informed us that the word of the day was ‘eloquence.’ We were divided into two groups for our warm up session where we had to find things in common with each other. This warm up session was unique and enjoyable, reminding us that we all have something in common. Each member of my group could agree that we all look forward to attending Toastmasters meetings and that we all love good food. Our first speaker gave a speech encouraging us to go to Jamaica and by the end of their speech, she had us longing to go to the beautiful Land of Wood and Water! The objectives of the speech were to use a sales presentation to grab attention and promote a unique proposition in their sales presentation. The speaker told us of their love for Jamaica and gave lush and informative descriptions of Jamaican culture. Our second speaker, Alicja bravely gave her Ice Breaker speech where she introduced herself to club members and used existing speaking skills. Alicja told us about working and studying in the UK. Her speech was a story of determination and adventures. She spoke with authority and confidence and has many excellent speaking techniques already! We look forward to more speeches from her. Gina gave us the third speech of the evening entitled ‘A Thousand Splendid Suns.’ Gina beautifully read an extract from the book A Thousand Splendid Suns by Khaled Hosseini. Before reading, she explained the plot of the book. Gina gave a moving and enthralling reading, making the audience want to hear more. Our evening was one of inspiration, ever-present humour and bravery. We are privileged to have such talented club members. To the next meeting!
